UPDATE:China Urges Airlines To Cancel,Delay ’09 Jet Delivery.

New aircraft deliveries are hurting the airlines right now, who already have too many aircraft, and not enough passengers. This may actually help the likes of Boeing who are experiencing delays on the new Dreamliner 787, which now looks like it will be ready for delivery sometime in 2011. By that time, world economies may have recovered and demand could be up again, making it a good time Boeing to deliver it’s new planes.

There are other sides to this issue as well. Both Airbus and Boeing are also fielding their share of order cancellations, and with the cancellations it seems that Airbus is the winner in net orders and deliveries. This is in part due to Boeing customers holding off for the 787, and other simply canceling their orders due to economic pressures, as was true when Airbus were continually delayed in delivering the A380, and Boeing was making the best of a bad day for Airbus.

All Nippon Airways will probably not take delivery of the first of their 787′s they have on order with Boeing until 2011 which is around 2 years later than had been planned. All Nippon is the first airline scheduled to receive the new 787 Dreamliner. It is not expected that the first test flight will not be until well into 2009. However they are hitting new milestones all the time. One of the most exiting, and most recent milestones is the wing break test (see the video below)

There’s have been a number of reasons for the delays, but possibly one of the most frustrating must be the parts suppliers who have had been hit by labor strikes.

The Dreamliner is built using carbon fiber composites for the fuselage, is a leader in fuel efficiency. Special design on the engine cowlings as well as highly innovative new turbine engines, should also make the 787 one of the quietest planes ever.
