I think there's enough blame to go round. While I certainly do not defend the airlines, and I find most of their practices self-serving, certainly NOT customer service centric, it has to be said that a lot of what we read in the media may be fact based, is almost always written in a way to grab reader attention. The media are as much to blame as the airlines themselves. I have a good friend who recently had a run in with an international airline (I'm hoping to get him to guest blog his experience for me) when he advised the airline of his severe allergy to peanuts, and asked if they could refrain from serving peanuts on his flight. This is a request that gets accommodated by a large group of airlines, but not all.

I can't help but think the airline corporate and the staff on the planes precipitate and exacerbate some of these incidents. How empowering it must be to the staff who cant talk back to their supervisors but have free reign to abuse passengers under the guise of security. I have heard of the mother whose child ran into a restricted area being tackled by an airline employee then her husband who tried to defend her then they both were charged. The airline attendant who told a mother to drug a baby who was crying. Then the passengers who are held on aircraft in holding on the runway for over 6 hours...that is unconscionable.Flying can be hazardous to your health if you have respitory problems, I know airlines have been shorting passengers on oxygen for many years but Southwest Airlines denied it in writing to me when I complained.

Flying coach is a real punishment I avoid flying unless absolutely necessary. Corporate greed is the cause, deregulation is the cause of the poor service.

holding on tarmac/passengers captive against their will/incite incident/induce forced removal to gain release/then sue the hell out of security, homeland boffos, airport, airport control, carrier, control region. as people fear any outspoken outrage will land them in some federal rathole for making a stink, a limit of 'on tarmac' hold time should be ENFORCED at 2 hrs maximum. beyond that, the plane should either be allowed to fly elsewhere or release passengers. thrombosis is an issue, flunky controllers need to get a life. penalties should follow if commercial entities fail to heed basic human rights.

I am so appalled by this story. The Airline Passengers Bill of Rights? Do we really lose our rights when we step onto an airliner? I cannot believe an airline has the right to kidnap and hold anyone prisoner. That is exactly what it sounds like. So this is what airlines are doing? And this is legal? I think the airlines should have to pay a million dollars to every single person they endanger in this way no matter what the "cause or reason". There is no excuse for this. All monies should be awarded without the ability of the airlines to appeal the amount if the tarmac imprisonment goes over two hours or a person who wants to leave the plane is held against their will.
